How to Use Your Own Router with Xfinity (6)3 min read

If you just want to use your own equipment with Xfinity, it’s possible to do so. If you recently signed up for Xfinity, chances are you were highly encouraged to use Xfinity Wireless Gateway. This is a device provided by Xfinity that serves as a router and modem in one.

Many times, when people start using a new internet service, they’d rather continue using their old router to make their monthly bill a bit cheaper. There’s good news: you can still use your own router with Xfinity. Here’s how.

Save 30% on top streaming services

New and existing Xfinity TV or Internet customers can add StreamSaverTM for just $15 per month and get Peacock Premium with ads, Apple TV+, and Netflix Standard with ads.

That's three streaming services for the price of one! And the savings are no joke—without StreamSaver, all three services would cost $29.96 per month.

1. Make sure your router is approved for Xfinity

Before using your router, make sure it can qualify as an Xfinity Wi-Fi router. To ensure everything checks out okay and that Xfinity can support high internet speeds on your existing router, check your device on the Xfinity website.1

Some routers are too old and can’t keep up with the speed of Xfinity. (Almost like the tortoise and the hare.) Once you know your Wi-Fi router is compatible with Xfinity, you’re ready to start setting up your router with the following steps.

2. Set up your modem in the best location

Your modem is what allows you to connect to the internet worldwide. Your router is what shares the internet with all the devices in your house.

In order to set up your router with Xfinity, it’s important to first make sure your modem is in an optimal location and turned on correctly. This will help to avoid those “where are my glasses?” moments when they’re actually on your head. We’ll help you get set up correctly from the get-go so that you don’t have to have any of those “oh duh” moments.

Make sure your modem is set up in a central room in your house. This will help your internet connection reach every corner to avoid glitches and slower connection. You’ll want to avoid placing your modem next to anything metal. Keep it out of tight spaces that might be able to interfere with the connection.

Next, make sure your modem is plugged in. After it’s plugged in and turned on, you’ll want to wait for the device to warm up. This could take a few minutes. Give your modem time to start working before trying to connect your router.

If you have an Xfinity Wireless Gateway modem, make sure the US/DS, Power, and Online lights are solid for over one minute. However, if your modem is not Xfinity, follow the setup instructions from the manufacturer.

3. Start the internet connection

If your modem is wireless, use the network name and password (located somewhere on the back or bottom of the modem) to connect your router.

To connect using Wi-Fi, go to the settings on one of the devices you want to connect and select the network name you just found on modem. Enter the password and cross your fingers. You should be able to connect to the network.

However, if you’re asked to provide a security key instead of a password, don’t sweat it. There should be a link called “Connect using a security key.” Once you click the link, then you should be able to enter the security key.

If your modem isn’t wireless, you’ll connect through an Ethernet cable.

This all sounds way more complicated than it is. You might be thinking you should have used an Xfinity router, but you should be able to use your own router with Xfinity without any issues.

Once the internet connection is set up, make sure it’s activated by going to the Xfinity website. You’ll see a series of steps you can follow to ensure everything is connected. (We know, more instructions … But the last thing you want is a poor connection or no internet altogether.)

4. Connect your devices

Now that your network is activated, all you need to do is connect your devices, including your smart home and security system. Don’t forget to connect to your home network. This step should be the easiest. If you changed your network password, then make sure to use the new one.

Remember, if you do have Xfinity xFi Gateway, then skip steps one through three. The process is just slightly easier. (All you really have to do is download an app on your phone, then select Activate.) But really, if you’re looking to save money and use your existing router, then why hassle with getting a new one?
